The Class C59 is a type of 4-6-2 steam locomotive designed by Hideo Shima and built by Japanese National Railways. The C classification indicates three sets of driving wheels. The C59 could haul 17 passenger cars. World War II limited their use as express trains, a function for which they were designed.

The class C59 was a Pacific locomotive of the JNR that was based on the C55 and C57. At an axle load of 16 tonnes, they were able to handle up to 17 passenger cars. Between 1941 and 1943, 100 were built which were called “pre-war type”.

C59 exceeded all of the C53's performance, but its weight was lighter than the C53. And C59 had a long body and big tender for long runs as her central feature. Her 19.1 meter length was the outer limit length for Japan's 20 meter long turn-tables.

As the successor to the C53 express passenger locomotive for trunk lines, 173 type C59 locomotives were built between 1941 and 1947 by Kisha-Seizo, Kawasaki, and Hitachi. The specifications of prewar and postwar models differed, and some parts were changed in terms of appearance too.

Sep 26, 2015 · The first engine to be converted was the C59-27 in November 1953 at Hamamatsu Works. It was followed by sixteen more in 1953-1954. Clearly, the conversion satisfied the JNR as it converted 30 more engines in 1960.
