The JNR Class ED78 is a Japanese AC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways and its successor the East Japan Railway Company from 1967 to 2000. The ED78 was designed as an AC locomotive capable of scaling the 33‰ gradients of the Usui Pass.
