The Junkers Ju 52/3m (nicknamed Tante Ju ("Aunt Ju") and Iron Annie) is a transport aircraft that was designed and manufactured by German aviation company Junkers.

Its rugged design and its performance flying from semi-prepared airstrips opened up air travel to the Canadian north, the Eurasian Steppe and even over inland South America, placing the Ju 52 amongst the most important commercial aircraft types in history. However, the Ju 52’s World War II service is what came to define the aircraft’s legacy.

Ju 52s delivered the attacking forces and their supplies during the German invasion of Norway, Denmark, France and the Low Countries in 1940. Almost 500 Ju 52s participated in the historic airborne assault on the island of Crete in May 1941, and Junkers later supplied Rommel's armored forces in North Africa.

This iconic aircraft was the brainchild of famed German aircraft designer, Hugo Junkers. With its distinctive corrugated metal skin and three engines, the Ju 52 quickly became a symbol of German aviation prowess. During World War II, the Junkers Ju 52 played a vital role, mainly serving as a military transport aircraft.

2018年8月24日 · Obsolete as a bomber by 1939 standards, the Ju 52 was nonetheless a rugged and reliable aircraft with good handling qualities and remained in widespread use as a transport throughout the rest of the war.

However, the Ju 52 was perhaps most famously deployed during the Battle of Crete in late May 1941. 493 Ju 52/3m aircraft were used to transport much of the 22,750 troops flown onto Crete for the Luftwaffe's largest airborne invasion of the war.
