The Luwo are one of the smaller tribes of South Sudan with population about 171,000. By some accounts, the Luo are the eighth largest ethnic group in South Sudan. They may be found in Aweil , Wau and Tonj states or in Tonj and Western Bahr el Ghazal and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states by the pre-2015 organisation .

The Luo of Kenya and Tanzania are a Nilotic ethnic group native to western Kenya and the Mara Region of northern Tanzania in East Africa. The Luo are the fourth-largest ethnic group (10.65%) in Kenya, after the Kikuyu (17.13%), the Luhya (14.35%) and the Kalenjin (13.37%). [3] .

[a] They lived in northeastern China, also known as Manchuria, before the 18th century. The Jurchens were renamed Manchus in 1635 by Hong Taiji. [6] .

Jur Mananger, or literally the 'foreigners of Anger's mother' in Dinka, is an amalgam of tribes of mainly Luo speaking people, found in eastern part of Gogrial district between Wunrok and Lietnhom. The Jur Mananger are made up of several clans reflecting their origin. They number between 20,000 and 30,000 people.

Locals in South Sudan also refer to Luo Thurri tribe, as Jur-Shatt, Boodho or Jur-Chol. The Luo Thurri are found in South Sudan in areas between Wau and Aweil in Northern and Western Bhar El Ghazal. The Luo Thurri are also located between Jur and Lol rivers, on Raja Nyamlell road, and up to Wau-Deim Zubeir road.

JUR (DIUR), the Dinka name for a tribe of negroes of the upper Nile valley, whose real name is Luoh, or Lwo. They appear to be immigrants, and tradition places their home in the south; they now occupy a district of the Bahr-el-Ghazal between the Bongo and Dinka tribes.

It seems that this movement was a gradual occupation of new country carried out by successive generations, rather than an armed invasion. They met with little opposition, making friends with the iron working Jur tribes of the south-west and driving the Lewel, a legendary cattle-owning tribe of dwarfs, north across the Bahr-el-Arab.
