In 1968 Heckler & Koch launched the HK33, chambered in 5.56x45mm, to compete with Colt’s AR-15/M16. The HK33, and later HK53, used the same roller-delayed blowback action developed for the G3 in the mid 1950s. However, few major contracts were forthcoming with the German military opting to continue using the 7.62x51mm G3.

The 45 mm anti-tank gun model 1937 (factory designation 53-K, GRAU index 52-P-243-PP-1), nicknamed the Sorokapyatka (from Russian сорокапятка, or "little forty-five"), was a light quick-firing anti-tank gun used in the first stage of the German-Soviet War.

The HK 53 is the short carbine variant of the HK 33 rifle. It is often classified as a sub machine gun due to its compact size. The HK 53 looks like it has similar proportions as the MP5, but the magazine well and forearm and flash hider are longer, making it a slightly longer weapon.

HK 33 is a delayed blowback operated, selective fire rifle, that utilizes a two piece bolt. Two rollers attach to the bolt, and they function to delay the blowback. This is the method of delaying blowback originally invented by Ludwig Vorgrimmler and used first in the design of the StG 45 (M).

It had better stopping power than a 9mm submachine gun, but was small enough to be used in tight spaces e.g. getting in and out of vehicles or inside buildings.

This Chester County Armory listing is for a semi-automatic Heckler & Koch model HK53 5.56mm NATO semi-automatic short barrel rifle. This NFA registered SBR was setup by famed H&K gunsmith Ralph Smith at RTDS Manufacturing. It started out life as an HK imported model 93 that has been converted to its short barrel brethren, model HK 53.
