The main landing gear of the KLM 4805 smashed into the other jumbo destroying the top of the Pan Am fuselage and ripping away KLM's main gear. Mortally wounded, robbed of airspeed by the energy transferred to the impact with Pan Am, KLM settled back to the runway at less than 100 knots, skidded, and burst into intense flames.
