The Kawasaki KX 500 is a 499 cc (30.5 cu in) two-stroke single motocross motorcycle made by Kawasaki from 1983 until 2004. The Kawasaki KX500 was developed as an air-cooled 500cc motocross bike for competition in the 500cc and Open-Class of motocross.

It got a new motor with liquid-cooling and it was, for the first time in Kawasaki’s history, the best bike in its class. The Honda CR500R of the time was faster, but had terrible power delivery and wicked handling. The next year, Kawasaki gave the KX a feature that no other 500cc two-stroke had ever seen: a KIPS power valve.

It was a humble beginning for one of the greatest dirt bikes in history. At the time, there were no 500cc motocrossers. Kawasaki was the first to go there since the notorious 501 Maico of the previous decade. But in the end, the KX would outlast all others of its kind, officially turning out the lights on the 500 two-stroke class in 2004.

A little over a year ago we took our first KX500 challenge. Veteran District 37 racer Paul Krause asserted that no bike could beat the big KX two-stroke in a classic desert bomb run. Nothing today would start as quickly, launch as hard or go as fast through a straight section of desert.

This legend spawned the 500-cc 2-stroke MX bike segment in 1983 and was the same two-wheeler that ended it in 2004. It was, for most people, raw power incarnate.
