Kaya Kinondo is an important Kaya for both Natural and Cultural Heritage in the Kenya Coast. The site has an active sacred site (mafingo), 4 traditional paths, an old water hole and a central clearing that is regularly used for sacred activities by the community.

Kaya Kinondo forest is a wonderful place to visit if you want to learn about the culture and history of the Digo people, especially pre-Muslim/Christian beliefs and medicinal plants. For about £5 you get a tour of the forest with a knowledgeable guide, and the fee benefits the local community.

Kaya Kinondo forest is the great destination for the Mijikenda religious beliefs and practices with the subtribes like Digo, Chonyi, Duruma, Giriama, Jibana, Kambe, Kauma, Rabai and Ribe, as they use the forest as the ancestral homes of the different Mijikenda people.

Kaya Kinondo contains five possible endemic species, and 140 tree species classified as ‘rare’, within its 30 hectares – the space of a suburban residential block. The main purpose of the kaya was to house the villages of the Mijikenda, which were located in a large central clearing.
