Kok Zhailau (Kazakh: Көк Жайлау, romanized: Kök jailau, lit. 'Green Pasture', Russian: Кок Жайляу) is a plateau in the Trans-Ili Alatau. It is located at an altitude of 1,450 m (4,760 ft) to 1,740 m (5,710 ft) between the Small and Big Almaty gorges, 10 km from the city of Almaty (in Kazakhstan). [1] [2]

In the past, this place served as a pasture for animals but now it’s a favourite hiking destination among Almaty residents and city visitors.

Follow along the river for 100m until a green arrow points you right towards Kok Zhailau. Follow the track through the forest. The first part is quite steep, it becomes flatter after that. 2 hours and 700 altitude meters later you reach the pass underneath Peak Kumbel.

Kok Zhailau is one of the few places where the legendary Sivers apple tree, the glorious ancestor of Almaty aport, has survived in nature. This relic variety is under special government protection.
