According to the World Taekwondo Federation, Koryo poomsae symbolizes “seonbae” which means a learned man. Koryo (Goryeo or Goreyeo) is also the name of an important ancient Korean dynasty.

Koryo (Korea), the first Taekwondo black belt formed to be studied, is the name of an old Korean Dynasty and that kind of spirit is reflected in the movements of the Poomsae Koryo. Each movement of this Poomsae is meant to represent the strength and energy that was needed at the time to control the Mongols.

For Koryo (고려), the floor pattern symbolizes "seonbae", which means "learned man." The name of this poomsae memorializes the Koryo Dynasty (918 C.E. - 1392 C.E.) and reflects the indomitable will of the Korean people in the face of extreme adversity.
