In addition to foster care and adoption, the state of Kentucky values relative and fictive kin caregivers and their dedication to children. Familial and fictive relationships and attachments are paramount for a child’s wellbeing.

There are several requirements for adults who want to become foster or adoptive parents. These requirements may vary slightly by agency, but most require some variation of the following:

Foster care is a temporary home for a child with a caring family. The goal is to safely reunite these children with their birth families. As a foster parent, your impact goes beyond a child - you may have a chance to help an entire family move toward wholeness. Children in foster care come from all backgrounds.

Kentucky Foster Adoptive Caregiver Exchange System (KY FACES)
In Kentucky, there are 8,084 children in out of home care with an average age of 9.8 years. There are 1,774 children with a goal of adoption; of those 1774 children, 855 are legally free for adoption; of those 855 children, 355 children do not have identified families at this time.

Adoption Services Branch - Cabinet for Health and Family Services
KAPE is focused on identifying forever families for children in out of home care who are legally free for adoption but do not have an identified adoptive home. Please visit the KAPE website for mor e information. The Adoption Services Branch also conducts birth parent searches for adult adoptees who are 21 years of age and older.
