The W-rating refers to a firestop system’s ability to resist water passage through a floor assembly. In August of 2004, UL established a procedure to quantifiably measure a firestop product’s water resistance in buildings. To qualify as a Class 1 W-rated system, the firestop assembly must withstand a 3-ft head of water for 72 hours with no leakage.

“W” Rating – The W Rating quantifiably measures resistance of a firestop product to water in buildings. Developed to address concerns by building owners about the ability of a firestop system to resist the passage of water through floor assemblies, the W rating development offers a new quantifiable characteristic for a firestop system.

L-rating, Smoke Ratings. The L-rating is the amount of air (or cold smoke) that can leak through a penetration and the number indicates the amount of air in cubic feet per minute. L-ratings are tested with a differential pressure of 0.30 inches water column (75 Pa) at 75 o F and at 400 o F.

Water: The “W” rating, established in 2004, indicates the fire-stopping material has passed the UL test for water tightness. The Class One requirements for water tightness include subjecting the material to a 3-foot water column for 72 hours, followed by a fire and hose stream test, conducted in accordance with ANSI/UL 1479.
