Chesapeake and Ohio No. 490 is the sole survivor of the L-1 class 4-6-4 "Hudson" type steam locomotives. It was built by ALCO's Richmond works in 1926 as an F-19 class 4-6-2 "Pacific" type to be used to pull the Chesapeake and Ohio's secondary passenger trains.

The Chesapeake & Ohio L1 Hudsons are a class of 4-6-4 "Hudson" type steam locomotives that were built between 1946-1947 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Five rebuilt as L1 class Hudson (4-6-4) types at the C&O's Huntington, WV, workshops in 1946.

Starting in 1946, the Chesapeake & Ohio took five of its Class F-19 Pacific 4-6-2 locomotives and converted them into Class L-1 Hudsons. This rework was done in its Huntington Shops and was completed in 1947. All but one of the new L-1s were covered with a streamlined stainless steel cowl which was painted yellow and silver.

In 1929. the NKP obtained four more Hudsons (designated Class L-1b with road numbers 174 through 177), this time from the Lima Locomotive Works. These eight locomotives were the pride of the NKP's passenger service and saw 16 years of handling main line passenger trains between Buffalo, NY and Chicago, IL until displaced by diesels in the 1950s.
