Shirley served on board Landing Craft, Tank (LCT) 684, part of 24th LCT Flotilla, Force G. On arriving on the coast of Normandy they sailed past H.M.S. Belfast and headed towards land. The self propelled guns of 7th Armoured Division that were being carried on board the LCT fired, then the LCT went back around for a second firing.
