The history of the LNER J3 and J4 locomotives is complicated, and starts with Stirling 's Great Northern Railway (GNR) Class J7. Thirty five J7s were built between 1867 and 1873. These had 4ft 0.5in domeless boilers, inside frames, and 17in 24in cylinders; and became the basis of GNR 0-6-0 "Standard Goods" development until 1901.

Upon the Groupings of 1923, the class became the LNER J3s. The LNER also rebuilt 82 locomotives, with the last rebuild occurring in 1929. By this point, there were only 157 J4s left in service. From 1926 onwards, the J3s were refitted with Ross pop safety valves, as was standard on the LNER. In service, the J3s handled the same duties as the J4s.

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) produced several classes of locomotive, mostly to the designs of Nigel Gresley, characterised by a three-cylinder layout with a parallel boiler and round-topped firebox. It produced the most famous locomotive of its day, 4468 'Mallard', the holder of the world steam locomotive speed record.

Sturrock 400 Class 0-6-0 Ivatt J3 (with 24″ stroke cyls) or J2 (26″). The engines gradually received Stirling boilers, initially 4′-0½” diam. then 4′-2½” after 1878.

2021年3月20日 · From memory the GNR Atlantic predated the J3 and so K's were possibly looking to maximise applications for the tender. It was never designed to fit the Triang/Hornby chassis, it came a with punched plain brass and etched coupling rods.
