Okkir or okkil is the term for geometric and flowing designs (often based on an elaborate leaf and vine pattern) and folk motifs that can be usually found in Maranao and Muslim-influenced artwork, especially in the southern Philippines, and in some parts of Southeast Asia.

Okir/Ukkil is a traditional Malayan design that depicts animals, plants, and mythical figures through highly decorative and curvilinear lines. It originates from an old Malayan word with similar meaning to the Tagalog word for "to carve," and is often rendered in hardwood and brass.

The Maranao art is typically peasant folk art. It is basically utilitarian from the smallest comb to the biggest boat. And it is not as complicated as it may look. The ever-present basic design called Okir is usually made more interesting by the continuous and graceful flow of botanical, floral or zoological elements.

Okir or Okkil (the difference being that Okir is a Maranao pronunciation while Okkil is Maguindanaon), is one of these traditional designs that comes from an old Malayan word that has the same derivative meaning as the Tagalog word "ukit" which means to carve.

Okir designs consist of scrolling floral and leaf patterns called "Okir-a-Dato" created by men, and geometric patterns called "Okir-a-Bai" created by women. The study aims to educate people on Okir designs and their cultural significance to help appreciate Maranao art and symbolism.

Ukkil or okir are undoubtedly the most important to the Maranao, Maguindanaon, Iranun, Tau Sug, Sama, and Badjao of Mindanao. To these ethnic Muslims, the term ukkil, means both the art of sculpting or carving and a particular curvilinear design.
