For about six months, around 1886 – 1888, Lipa was the world’s sole supplier of coffee beans. This was a period of grandeur and extravagance for Lipa. Its society was unrivaled in terms of wealth, prestige and culture.

At the celebration of the elevation of Lipa to a city in January 1888, José Rizal was invited by Dr. Jose Lozada, Catalino Dimayuga and the brothers Celestino and Simeon Luz but Rizal responded only with his Hymno Al Trabajo which he dedicated to the zeal and industry of the Lipeños.

Himno al trabajo (Filipino: Dalit sa Paggawa; English: "Hymn to Labor") is a poem written by Dr. José Rizal. The poem was requested by his friends from Lipa, Batangas, in January 1888 in reaction to the Becerra Law, and to address the hardships of Lipeños (people from Lipa). [1]

Lipa became the backbone of the Philippine coffee industry, which reached its apex in the late 1880’s; soon after the airborne fungus Hemileia vastatrix had destroyed all the coffee plantations in neighbouring Ceylon, Java, Sumatra as well as in India and Brazil. Lipa, for a brief period was the world’s sole supplier of coffee beans.

2010年6月1日 · In the Library of the Fabella family-owned JRU Jose Rizal University along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City are the private papers of former Senator Maria Kalaw-Katigbak. Among those papers are important old documents and rare antique photographs pertaining to her ancestors, the Solis family of Old Lipa, Batangas.

Jose Rizal wrote this poem for his friends from Lipa, Batangas in January 1888 as a tribute to the hardships, industriousness and resiliency of Lipenos.
