The Lotus 38 was the first rear-engined car to win the Indianapolis 500, in 1965, driven by Jim Clark. It was run by Lotus at Indianapolis from 1965 to 1967; a total of 8 were built, most for use by Lotus, but several were sold for use by other drivers, including A. J. Foyt and Mario Andretti .

The 1965 Lotus 38 finally won the Indy 500 for Colin Chapman and Jim Clark after Clark had finished second in 1963 in the Lotus 29 and had retired after leading from pole in 1964 in the Lotus 34.

The improved 1965 Indianapolis Lotus 38 monoposto racing car. Jim Clark won the race at a record speed of 150.69 mph, with the similar cars of Parnelli-Jones and Miller second and fourth. In 1966 Clark took second place.

Chapman was back again in 1965 with the new Type 38. The car was an evolution of the previous Indy racers – longer, wider, and with a Ford V8 that burned alcohol rather than regular fuel.
