The Lotus 91 was a car used by Lotus in the 1982 Formula One season, designed by Colin Chapman, Martin Ogilvie and Tony Rudd. During the winter of 1981/2 the Type 87 design evolved into the Type 91. Fitted with a cleaner body, it was lighter still; the composite tub, for example, only weighed 18 kg.

There are three cutting-edge solutions debuting with the Lotus 91. The first is carbon brakes, introduced to Formula 1 by Gordon Murray and his Brabham team. The second is active suspension, which allows for controlling and adapting the behaviour of the suspension according to circumstances.

Team Lotus Type 91 Car was dubbed "Colin's weight watcher". Water cooled brakes. I.D. numbers started with 91/5, to continue with the sequential numbering of the carbon monocoques.

The other significant change under the skin was return of computer-controlled ‘active’ suspension, which Lotus had been working on for several years and had already been seen, in less advanced form, on the Type 92 of 1983.
