LVTR1 was the recovery and maintenance variant of the LVTP5. A winch was installed with a maximum single-line pull capacity of 45,000lb (20,400kg), and the power for this was provided by the Willys 4-cylinder 48hp engine common to the M38A1 quarter-ton truck.
