Messier 78 or M78, also known as NGC 2068, is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780 and included by Charles Messier in his catalog of comet-like objects that same year. [4] M78 is the brightest diffuse reflection nebula of a group of nebulae that includes NGC 2064, NGC 2067 and NGC 2071.

It has an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and lies at an approximate distance of 1,600 light years from Earth. It has the designation NGC 2068 in the New General Catalogue.

2024年8月25日 · M78 is located approximately 1,600 light-years away from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 8. A box in the ground-based infrared image of M78 at left shows the location of Hubble’s close-up infrared view on the right. M78 was discovered in 1780 by Charles Messier’s colleague Pierre Méchain. It is best seen in January.

This faint reflection nebula is separated from the main body of M-78 by a dark dust lane. There is additional dark nebula on the other side. This reflection nebula appears to be reflecting light from the same B-type giant stars as M-78 itself.
