M103 was, however, a pretty bad tank due to sharing an overloaded drive system with the M48. Combined with its short range, this meant M103's would be predictably lost in a retreat. NATO planned to retreat in any opening round in Europe, so M103's were worse than useless on the only front in which peer-peer armored warfare was foreseeable.
