The M106 mortar carrier (full designation: Carrier, Mortar, 107 mm, Self-propelled) was a tracked, self-propelled mortar carrier in service with the United States Army. It was designed to provide indirect fire support to primarily infantry, units, but could also provide support to any unit under attack within range.
The M106 was converted to the M106A1, which was then converted to the M106A2. The M106A2 is capable of Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) operations. 1-7-2. The M106 is based on the chassis and hull of the M113 tracked armored personnel carrier. This allows for parts commonality and reduced production cost. The M106A1 and M106A2 variants feature the same upgrades as found on the M113A1 and M113A2 respectively.
