M3's were the common horn on the Denver Rio Grande Western and were quite common on locomotives operated by SP, SP&S, Pennsy, D&H and many other eastern railroads. Round base M3 and photo courtesy Brent Lee. The M3RT1 is a variation of the M3 in which the #1 bell has an elliptical flare and is angled upward 10 degrees from horizontal.

M3 (early): This is the early M3 horn that was produced for a few years up to the early or mid fifties. It has a round base around the bells, and 3/16 air orifices that produce a very melodic and rich three-chime sound.

Nathan AirChime's M Series horns were the first major production locomotive chime horn to be produced. They are constructed of sand cast bells, heads and manifolds, and have multi-piece bronze diaphragms. M horns have a classic, mellow sound that is unlike other locomotive horns.

Nathan M3's helped win the Cold War sounding off over the German country side moving the U S Army's supplies. This was in the days of a full 5 man crew using hand and whistle signals. No radios. German locomotives have only marker lamps with no true headlights. They also have peanut sounding horns and small air compressors.

A collection of several Nathan M3, P3, P5 horns. Collected over the past 5 years and revised constantly. Some sounds were adapted from previous Trainz hornsounds, however I have found the original recordings of these sounds and created my own version. Each sound includes older EMD bronze bell sounds.
