The Melt Flow Index (MFI) is a measure of the ease of flow of the melt of a thermoplastic polymer. It is defined as the mass of polymer, in grams, flowing in ten minutes through a capillary of a specific diameter and length by a pressure applied via prescribed alternative gravimetric weights for alternative prescribed temperatures.

MFI value is a quick guide to select the appropriate processing methods. However, MFI is measured at a constant shear rate and temperature which may not be sufficient to select the processing window of a polymer. In addition, MFI does not take account of long chain branching, shear rate, shear stress, pressure drop, and temperature gradient [3].

The test measures how much material flows through a standardized die while subjected to a specified load and temperature. The result is expressed as melt index (MI) or melt flow index (MFI), which by using various different test methods, delivers standard characteristic values such as MFR (melt mass-flow rate) and MVR (melt volume-flow rate).

The amount of plastic flowing out of the mold within approximately 10 minutes is recorded as the MFI value.
