The Local MGI has three main benefits: Take stock of local migration strategies or initiatives in place and identify good practices as well as areas that could be further developed. Foster the dialogue on migration between national governments and local authorities.

A look into the way local authorities govern migration. In an effort to support the formulation of well-managed policies and foster a dialogue between national and local level authorities, IOM adapted the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) to the local level (the Local MGI).

The MGI helps governments, upon request, take stock of their migration policies and strategies to identify good practices and areas with potential for further development. By focusing on government ownership of the process, the MGI supports governments at the national and local levels to gradually improve their migration management systems.
