The British Rail Class 419 Motor Luggage Vans (or MLV) were battery electric multiple unit cars built from 1959-61 by BR at Eastleigh Works. Each MLV unit is essentially a motorised BG carriage, with a driver's position at each end. Each vehicle has two luggage compartments and a guard's compartment. [4][8]

Ten motor luggage vans (MLV) were built between 1959 and 1961 to provide sufficient luggage space on boat trains to and from the Kent ports. Unlike their contemporaries the 4 Ceps/Beps, with whom they mostly worked, they had a non gangwayed suburban cab.

To make full use of the facilities provided in the Kent Coast Electrification scheme, it was decided to provide a number of Motor Luggage Vans (MLV) mainly to enable the large amounts of luggage to be conveyed on electrically operated Boat Trains between London and the channel ports at Dover Western Docks and Folkestone Harbour.
