The C628 was intended as a replacement for the C624, announced at the Chicago launch event, but never produced due to being made rapidly obsolete by improvements in engine technology. The C628 was powered by a 2,750-horsepower, 16-cylinder, Model 251C engine. It was launched in 1963, and remained in production until 1968.

A mighty fleet of fifty MLW MX-624 were bought in 1975/76 (bns M6090.01 - 30 and M6094.01 - 20). Theit 12-251F engine develops 2400 HP diverted to six axles. When I visited Cuba as part of a Trains Unlimited Tour in 2003, some of the newest motive power on the island were MLW MX 624's. These locomotives called Havana Casamayor Shops home. FCC 52433 was hostled from a track near the entrance to the shops onto a transfer table.

2009年2月16日 · I don’t know how the C424 stacked up then but later, as the big MLWs were retired, the C424s were retrofitted with 2nd hand alternators in place of the original generators. That suggests they were also a pretty decent locomotive. CP tested the C630M against the SD40, and the MLW proved a better puller.
