Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a measure of the average size of your dog's platelets (thrombocytes). MPV is important in determining the cause of thrombocytopenia (a low platelet count) or thrombocytosis (a high platelet count) but if your dog's platelet count is normal, it isn't an important value to assess.

PLT = platelets, so his platelets are low and then his MPV (= mean platelet volume) being high means the size of his platelets are larger, have just come from his bone marrow, so he is making more, so the low platelet count, in light of the high MPV may be a significant finding.

The MPV also called the mean platelet volume can indicate that there is formation of new platelets. Newer platelets are ideally larger the old ones. If the MPV was high along with total platelet numbers, this can indicate thrombocythemia. However this is not the case. The MPV is probably only incidentally high in this report.
