A few years later, he was on the Achille Lauro when the ship caught fire as it was passing around the Horn of Africa, and he helped the crew (who unlike the Oceanos’ crew, were not abandoning the ship and leaving everyone else to die) organise the passengers and the evacuation process.

Oceanos was very poorly maintained while simultaneously operating in one of the most dangerous and rough areas of the oceans. The sewage and water systems had their one way “check valves” removed and not replaced. A very small loss of hull integrity caused a storage tank in the lower machine spaces to fill with sea water.

2023年4月5日 · MTS Oceanos (sank 4 Aug 1991) suffering uncontrolled flooding. The ship's entertainers, made the mayday call and helped South African Marines land on the ship from naval helicopters. All 571 passengers & crew survived. (Captain and some of the crew were convicted of negligence for fleeing)
