MAP is caused by an inherited mutation (change) to the MUTYH gene (also called the MYH gene). This condition is autosomal recessive, which means you must inherit the gene mutation from both of your parents.

The MUTYH gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called MYH glycosylase, which is involved in the repair of DNA. This enzyme corrects particular errors that are made when DNA is copied (DNA replication) in preparation for cell division. DNA is made up of building blocks called nucleotides, each of which has a specific partner.

MUTYH-associated polyposis is caused by mutations (changes) in the MUTYH gene that are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. It is a type of hereditary cancer syndrome. Also called MAP. Autosomal recessive inheritance is a way a genetic trait or condition can be passed down from parent to child.

MYH: A base excision repair gene responsible for an hereditary colon cancer syndrome. MYH is located on the short (p) arm of chromosome 1 in region 1p34.3-p32.1. MYH encodes an enzyme that removes the base adenine from mispairs (with 8-oxoguanine) that arise during the replication of oxidized DNA.
