Matterdale is a civil parish in the Lake District of Cumbria, England. It lies on the northern shore of Ullswater . The parish includes the settlements of Dockray, Matterdale End, Ulcat row , Watermillock and Wreay.

The charming Matterdale valley is at a height of about 300m (1,000ft) above sea level, and lies to the north of the beautiful Ullswater lake. Most of the waters of the valley gather in the Aira Beck which tumbles over a series of waterfalls before plummeting over the well know landmark of Aira Force on its way to Ullswater.

The Cumbria parish of Matterdale lies to the north-west of Ullswater, the second largest lake in the Lake District National Park. The Parish includes the main villages of Dockray and Watermillock, along with Matterdale End, Bennetthead and Thackthwaite, which are all located to the north-west of Ullswater.

2014年7月9日 · ‘The church of Matterdale is situated almost 1,000 feet above sea level, amid an amphitheatre of glorious hills, between the hamlets of Dockray and Matterdale End, in the ancient parish of Greystoke.’

Thornythwaite Farm is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, just above the second largest lake in the country, Ullswater, and only a few miles off the main road (A66) between Penrith and Keswick, 15 minutes from the M6.

Walking around Matterdale is outstanding - with a great variety from a stroll around the lovely Aira Force to a major winter expedition to Helvellyn. Below are some suggestions - from a mile to twenty or so!

Matterdale is a civil parish in Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria, England. It contains 33 listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England . Of these, three are listed at Grade II*, the middle of the three grades, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade.
