Men-yoroi (面鎧), also called menpō (面頬) or mengu (面具), [1][2][3] are various types of facial armour that were worn by the samurai class and their retainers in feudal Japan. These include the sōmen, menpō, hanbō or hanpō, and happuri. The men-yoroi, which covered all or part of the face, provided a way to secure the top-heavy kabuto (helmet).

Menpo (or men yoroi), is the term for various types of facial armor worn by the samurai class and their retainers in Feudal Japan. This Gashira Class menpo is a copy of an original, which features a kuchi hige (mustache), shiwa (facial wrinkles), odayori ore kugi (posts), hana (detachable nose guard) , mimi (ear covers) and tare (throat guard).

What is Tare of Samurai Armor? This is a multi-stage plate that protects the throat to the chest. It is mainly used in the armor of the late Muromachi period, known as ""Tousei Gusoku"". It is a general term for half cheek (Hanbo), full face (Soumen), and under-eye cheek (Me no Shitabo).

The interior of the menpo is lacquered in red urushi and the tare (gorget) is in kiritsuke kozane with navy blue silk lacing. The Iwai school is one of the oldest schools of gunsmiths in Japan, and was founded by the renowned gunsmith Iwai Yozaemon who lived between the Momoyama era and the beginning of the Edo period.
