You were correct, we Australian use happy Christmas, although merry Christmas has also become popular, especially among young people who are more influenced by American TV, but in the shopping centres the sales assistants still say Happy Christmas.

2015年11月3日 · I'm one of those people that wouldn't say "Merry Christmas" prior to the day before Thanksgiving. I get that people love the Christmas season and want it to be as long as possible, but the longer a "season" of celebration, the more it gets diluted (IMHO). The other reason is that for Christians, "Advent" doesn't start until after Thanksgiving.

Merry Christmas is a well done thriller imo, and pretty inventive in one specific aspect, it takes a perfect crime and gives it a genuinely human twist. Nothing groundbreaking wrt the genre like Andhadhun, although it's not comparable since both are way too different kinds of thrillers.

I’ve written Merry Christmas and have a happy new year and Happy Christmas and have a Merry New Year. They both work. As for saying it I stick to Merry Christmas. Depending on the person you’re talking to they’re interchangeable and personalised. I have a friend who prefers saying Happy Christmas, so I change it to her way when I see her.

Merry Christmas and happy new year is usually: Hyvää joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta, which if translated literally would mean good Christmas and happy/fortunate new year. In Finnish we usually wish hyvää with other holidays too, like hyvää pääsiäsistä (good Easter) or hyvää juhannusta (good midsummer).

There is a good explanation here but it boils down to this; the Brits associate "merry" with "merrymaking" or drunkness. Saying "Merry Christmas" is saying you approve of getting plastered on Christmas (which is what bringing that figgy pudding is all about, by the way). Happy Christmas is more associated with the emotion of being joyful.
