Many years before Despereaux and Roscuro were born, a six-year-old girl named Miggery "Mig" Sow witnesses the death of her ill mother, who tells her that there is nobody in the world who cares what she wants. Afterwards, Mig is sold to work by her father for some cigarettes, a hen, and a red tablecloth to a man Mig calls "Uncle".

Miggery Sow is a supporting character, a mistreated serving girl who becomes entangled in the story's events. Gregory the Jailer is a supporting character who plays a significant role in Despereaux's journey. Antoinette and Lester are minor characters who contribute to the development of the story.

Miggery Sow is a peasant girl that originally worked at a farm, before serving the castle. She was abandoned as a child by her father, later revealed as Gregory the Jailer. She has a heart-shaped birthmark on the back of her neck, and Gregory had said that she had so much heart, some had to be put on the outside.

When Miggery (or "Mig") goes to work for the man that her father has sold her to, she calls her new master "Uncle." Uncle makes Mig clean up after him every day, and forces her to tend to his sheep and cook for him. Whenever things aren 't to his liking, he gives her a "clout to the ear“.
