Almost all moai have overly large heads, which account for three-eighths of the size of the whole statue. They also have no legs. The moai are chiefly the living faces ( aringa ora ) of deified ancestors ( aringa ora ata tepuna ).

Some are much bigger, however, with the tallest measuring a whopping 33 feet (12 meters) and weighing in at 82 tonnes. The largest unfinished Moai would have been 69 feet (21 meters) and weighed as much as 270 tonnes.

Almost all moai have overly large heads three-fifths the size of their bodies. Moai must have been extremely expensive to craft and transport; not only would the actual carving of each statue require effort and resources, but many of the finished statues were then hauled to their final location and erected.

Size and weight of the statues. Moaïs have varied sizes and weights, of course. The first ones that were carved were the real size, that is to say they measured about 1m60 to 1m80, no more, for an approximate weight around one ton. But gradually the dimensions have increased , reaching sizes of 10m for larger ones.

The massive 887 stone statues or moai built in Easter Island by the Rapa Nui are unique. Although there are stone figures in other Polynesian islands none of them are of the size of the Easter Island statues. The largest finished statue reaches more than 30 feet or 9.14 meters and the smallest 6 feet or 1.80 meters.

The size and complexity of the moai increased over time, and it is believed that Hoa Hakananai’a dates to around 1200 C.E. It is one of only fourteen moai made from basalt, the rest are carved from the island’s softer volcanic tuff.

Moai size and weight. The average height is 4.5 meters and the weight of more than 5 tons. Moai Tuturi: it is the smallest of all. It is only 3 meters high, weighs 4 tons and is located mainly on the platform of the Rano Raraku volcano. Moai Ko Te Riku: it measures 5 meters, weighs 6 tons and is in the ancient Tahai ceremonial temple.
