The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been life testing titanium-water heat pipes as well as evaluating several heat pipe radiator designs. The testing includes thermal modeling and verification of model, material compatibility, frozen startup of heat pipe radiators, and simulating low-gravity environments.
Marshall Space Flight Center’s Test Stand 115 (TS115) is a propulsion component test facility in operation since its original activation in 1964 for testing small to medium size liquid rocket engine components including injectors, channel-cooled chambers, nozzles, passively-cooled metallic and composite nozzle extensions, valves, turbomachinery,...

NASA and academia have been investigating new technology heat pipes, utilizing annular solids without wicking sinter or working liquid, but with choice of at least two internal conductivity enhancers. Referred to as “Supertubes”, these solid state heat pipes display super conducting characteristics once temperature threshold is reached.
Engineers at MSFC matured the Friction Stir Welding process to full implementation on NASA flight programs. Most recently, a Self-Reacting Friction Stir Welding (SRFSW) process was developed to manufacture the SLS Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter, and a Friction Pull Plug Welding process was developed .
