It is one of postwar Japan's most successful aircraft, with 704 manufactured in Japan and San Angelo, Texas, in the United States.

It is a single-shaft turboprop with an integral gearbox, two-stage centrifugal compressor, reverse annular combustors and three-stage axial turbine.
