Atrus is the main non-player character in the Myst series, appearing in all five games of the main series; he also narrates the opening of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. He is a member of the ancient D'ni civilization, though his only D'ni inheritance is through his paternal grandfather.

Atrus is the main non-playable character throughout the Myst saga. He's an important figure of the D'ni and the father of Sirrus, Achenar, and Yeesha. Born in 1756 (earth years) Atrus was the son of Gehn and Keta and was, in turn, a kin of the D'ni civilization. Because of the death of his mother, Gehn left him to be raised by his grandmother Anna.

In the Book of D'ni, Atrus, the last D'ni known to be alive, together with his wife Catherine and young helpers from an Age he wrote (Averone), finally manages to open the crumbled exit of the room in K'veer and gain access to all D'ni. They then set out to find old linking books and find D'ni survivors who eventually escaped too, during the Fall.

Atrus plays the central character in the Book of Atrus, the prequel to the original Myst game. This book shows Atrus growing up, first in the Cleft with his grandmother, then as he learns to write Ages with his father. Gehn came back to the cleft when Atrus was fourteen and took the boy from his grandmother.
