STS-51-L was the disastrous 25th mission of NASA's Space Shuttle program and the final flight of Space Shuttle Challenger. It was planned as the first Teacher in Space Project flight in addition to observing Halley's Comet for six days and performing a routine satellite deployment.

Other milestone missions would include the launch of two planetary spacecraft, an astronomy mission to study Halley’s Comet and the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. STS-51L, scheduled soon after the first mission of the new year, STS-61C, was set to be the 10th for space shuttle Challenger and the 25th in the program.
