The Wheatley J81 (NBR Class E) 0-6-0 Tank Engines. Wheatley came to the North British Railway (NBR) in 1867 and found that most of the locomotives lacked the power for the work that was required of them.

The NBR's locomotive classification system (introduced in 1913) is not very helpful because the same letter has been applied to several different classes. The North British Railway Study Group has developed its own classification system and a list can be found here.

The Drummond J82 (NBR Class R) 0-6-0T Locomotives. Although Wheatley had introduced a number of 0-6-0ST designs (J81 and J86) for local and branch passenger traffic on the North British Railway (NBR), Drummond found that the NBR required more. He solved this with his first NBR design, the Class R (LNER J82) 0-6-0T.

The NBR F Class (LNER Class J88) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives, designed by William P. Reid on the North British Railway. [1] They were used for dockyard shunting duties. [1]

The NBR D Class (LNER Class J83) was a class of 0-6-0 tank locomotives designed by Matthew Holmes for short distance freight, station pilot, and heavy shunting duties on the North British Railway. They were introduced in 1900 and had inside cylinders and piston valves operated by Stephenson valve gear.
