NGC 53 is a ringed barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Tucana. [1] It was discovered by John Herschel on 15 September 1836. [3] He described it as "very faint, small, extended". [3] The galaxy is approximately 120,000 light-years across, making it about as large as the Milky Way. [3]

NGC 5053 is the New General Catalogue designation for a globular cluster in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices. It was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel on March 14, 1784 and cataloged as VI-7.

2024年4月30日 · Before devoting attention to the comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, I revisited the globular clusters M-53 and NGC-5053 in the constellation Coma Berenices. This RGB image is a stack of ninety 2-minute sub-frames taken over a three-hour period.

NGC 5053 is of a much lesser stellar density than its prominent neighbor, and particularly lacks a concentrated bright nucleus. At a distance of about 53,500 light-years from us, NGC 5053's apparent diameter of 10.5 arc minutes corresponds to a linear extension of about 160 light-years.
