About 40 stars can be seen with a medium-sized telescope in this coarse open cluster. The bright star in the center has an orange tint, as does the brighter component of a double star at the northern edge of the cluster.

The open clusters NGC 1528 (VII 61) and NGC 1545 (VIII 85) were discovered on 28 December 1790 by William Herschel using his 18.7-inch reflecting telescope. For VII 61 he noted: «A beautiful cluster of large stars, very rich, and considerably compressed, about 15' diameter.»
