NGC 4173 is also a bit out of line because of its low surface brightness. NGC 4174 at the southern corner is by far the smallest of the four galaxies, but still much brighter than NGC 4173. In this spiral galaxy, too, we are almost looking at the edge, because the angle between the axis of rotation and the viewing direction is about 72 degrees.

NGC 4173 is a Barred Spiral Galaxy in the Coma Berenices constellation. NGC 4173 is situated north of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the northern hemisphere. Given its visual magnitude of 13.34, NGC 4173 is visible with the help of a telescope having an aperture of 10 inches (250mm) or more.

The large bluish irregular spiral NGC 4173, elliptical NGC 4169, the small NGC 4174 and edge-on NGC 4175 compose the box. NGC 4173 is at a closer distance of 50 mly and is a foreground galaxy. The other three at 180 mly are likely physically related.

Only three of them - NGC 4169, 4174 and 4175 are about equidistant. NGC 4173 is far in the foreground with only 50 million light years distance.
