NGC 5471 is an emission nebula (HII region) located in Messier 101 (the Pinwheel Galaxy) [1] towards the constellation Ursa Major. Eight other regions of Messier 101 are listed in the New General Catalogue, namely NGC 5447, NGC 5449, NGC 5450, NGC 5451, NGC 5453, NGC 5458, NGC 5461 and NGC 5462. [2]

NGC 5471 is a HII Ionized region in the Ursa Major constellation. NGC 5471 is situated north of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the northern hemisphere. Given its B magnitude of 14.54, NGC 5471 is visible with the help of a telescope having an aperture of 20 inches (500mm) or more.

This catalogue is a list of deep space objects compiled by John Louis Emil Dreyer in 1888 to update John Herschel's earlier work.

The spatial distribution of the stars shows that the star formation in NGC 5471 has proceeded along the whole region during, at least, the last 100 Myr. The current ionizing clusters are enclosed within a large bubble, which is likely to have been produced by the stars that formed in a major event ∼20 Myr ago.

The dwarf galaxy NGC 5477 and the active emission region NGC 5471 are neigbours of the famous M 101 spiral galaxy un Ursa Major. The data were imaged with a TS Photoline 130/910 mm apo triplet and an ASI2600mm-pro.
