NJSP HMRU provides round the clock response capabilities to hazardous materials, clandestine laboratories, and CBRNE incidents throughout NJ. Its mission is to assist local, other state and federal agencies in determining the extent of the incident and when necessary, document, collect, and analyze any material (s) or hazardous evidence.

Under OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.120, specific levels of training have been designed to meet the needs of the emergency responder. Different levels of response require different levels of training. The Hazardous Materials Response Unit (HMRU) provides emergency response to hazardous materials and toxic substance release incidents countywide and to neighboring jurisdictions upon request.
As an awareness trained (level 1) responder, you will respond to hazardous materials in a defensive mode; identify that a problem exists, isolate the problem, gather basic information, and report what you have found.

All Environmental Staff and HAZMAT Team members are currently certified as NJSP-HMRU HAZMAT 80-Hour Technicians. The Staff and Team also have some members that are NJSP Tanker or Railcar Specialist trained, along with the advanced NJSP-HMRU CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, Nuclear, Explosive) Technician trained.
Have an awareness of applicable Federal and State laws affecting hazardous materials planning, notification and response. The NJSPOEM On-Scene Incident Commander (OSIC) course is designed for individuals who will be required to assume direction and control for emergencies involving hazardous materials.

The prerequisites for the Hazardous Materials Technician Course are the New Jersey Level 1 First Responder Awareness and New Jersey Level 2 First Responder Operations Courses. This Hazardous Materials Technician Course is the result of the efforts and cooperation of a diverse group of people.
