Mar 3, 2025 · Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. has halted its planned auction of Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 No. 587, shown during its excursion career for the Indiana Transportation Museum. The organization is in settlement talks with the locomotive’s former owner.

Mar 5, 2025 · The sale of Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 587 has been halted. In January, Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp., announced that the 1918 built locomotive would be sold at auction after the owner failed to pay the non-profit storage fees .

Nickel Plate Road No. 587 is perhaps the best remaining example of a United States Administration (USRA) light Mikado steam locomotive, an outstanding design developed during World War I rearmament.

Quite an unlikely pairing of locos - Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 #587 having been restored the previous year after sitting in the Broad Ripple Park in Indianapolis for nearly 30 years is on tour. Meanwhile former C&O #7309 now serves the growing needs of the young Indiana Railroad.

Big news out of Ravenna, Kentucky! The Kentucky steam heritage museum has inked a deal to acquire former L&N "Big Emma" water tender, a 1910 Pennsylvania RPO, and a Pennsy baggage car will now be under the ownership of KSHC.

Mar 31, 2025 · Finally to see an update on NKP 587. Last time I saw this locomotive in operation was back in 1993 during an NS/NRHS trip from Melvindale, Michigan to Bellevue, Ohio. I missed out it's post-NS career operating for ITM. Hopefully it will be able to join the NEW NS 21st Steam.

May 8, 2006 · Nickel Plate No. 587 was one of the 625 engines of its type commissioned by the United States Railroad Administration during World War 1 rearmament and one of 15 identical locomotives built for the former Lake Erie & Western Railroad.

Jul 1, 2018 · It seems that the NKP 587 has been given another chance. After the Indiana Transportation Museum was given an eviction notice, the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation has given the 587 to opportunity to be moved to their shops and avoid being repossessed.
