Nickel Plate Road RS11 855 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1959 (c/n 83019) on Order S-3305 for 14 units, classed ARS-18c on the NKP.

The ALCO RS-11 is a class of diesel-electric locomotive rated at 1,800 hp (1.34 MW), that rode on two-axle trucks, having a B-B wheel arrangement. This model was built by both Alco (327 units) and Montreal Locomotive Works (99 units). Total production was 433 units. [1]

Two nice pictures of Nickel Plate Alco RS-11's both near the end of their service days for NKP before being absorbed into the Norfolk & Western system. Here is an Alco RS-11 unit with its distinctive striped paint but definitely showing its age. Delivered by Alco in March of 1953 (bldr # 82832), the unit was renumbered NW 2563 after the merger.
