Since 1990, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has identified core competencies for all nurse practitioners (NPs). These represent the competencies achieved for entry into practice upon graduation from an NP educational program.

NONPF has since grown into a strong organization representing approximately 96% of all institutions in the US with NP Programs. Additionally, NONPF represents faculty from programs in Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries.
