The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2] .

BN 800-844 are ex-NP 7000 series F9A's built by EMD from 1954 to 1956. By 1980 only these 11 were working in the Northwest although there were still 9 other ex-NP F9A's also in service in the Spokane area and further east. All were retired by BN in 1981-1982.

The 2-8-8-4 was first built for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1928. The 4-6-6-4 locomotives were so large that in many places in Montana the Northern Pacific had to widen the centers of its double track on the Rocky Mountain Division.
